Billing FAQ
Welcome to Heart of America Eye Care! Below is some helpful information to assist you in understanding how eye care billing works with medical and vision insurance coverage.
For insurance purposes, eye examinations are divided into two categories and benefit coverage for each type of exam varies by insurance policy.
- Medical exam: Exam to assess ocular disease
- Some examples are cataracts, diabetes, glaucoma, dry eyes, blepharitis, macular degeneration, etc.
- These are billed to your medical insurance
- Co-pays and/or deductibles may apply
- Does not usually include coverage for prescriptions for glasses/contacts
- Contact lens fittings fees and refractions would be the patient’s responsibility
- Vision exam: Exam for glasses and/or contacts
- These are billed to vision insurance, if you have it
- You will be notified if a significant medical problem is uncovered during your visit and prohibits the exam from being classified as a vision exam
- Contact lens fittings are not always covered by vision plans and may be the responsibility of the patient
- If you do not have a vision plan and your exam finds no medical disease, your visit will be self-pay
