What are eye exams?

An eye exam is an exam that is routinely performed to evaluate a person's eye health and screen for issues with their vision. Children and adults alike should undergo one of these exams routinely. Eye exams are an ideal way to identify and treat issues early on or even prevent them altogether. Eye exams can help detect serious eye conditions, including:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration

At Heart of America Eye Care, we perform comprehensive eye exams at our locations in Overland Park and Shawnee Mission, KS, and Belton, MO. We recommend that you have your eyes evaluated every yearly unless otherwise noted. For those over 55, we suggest annual exams. Most eye exams can be completed in about an hour or less. To schedule an eye exam for your family, contact your nearest location.

What does an eye exam include?

Your eye exam will likely start with a visual acuity test to determine the sharpness of your vision. If you need corrective lenses, we will perform a variety of refraction tests to establish the strength of the lens you need. Slit-lamp tests may be performed to see inside and around your eye. In some cases, we may dilate your eye to look at your blood vessels, optic nerve, macula, and vitreous. If your eyes are dilated, we suggest you have a friend or family member drive you home, as it may take a few hours for the effects to wear off.
